Commenting on the Chair’s Award for Design, the Judges said: "The theatre design and selection of materials to enhance and protect the building whilst reflecting the Cornish Coast is outstanding. Their focus on the user experience has delivered a theatre to be proud of".

In 2007, on New Road, Theatre Royal Brighton was to be 200 years old. Its life commenced in 1764 in a barn on the west side of the Old Steine near the Castle Hotel, then in 1774 in North Street opening with The Jealous Wife, then Duke Street in 1778 with a private act of parliament to authorise the start of this Theatre. In 1806, the Prince of Wales, who later became the Prince regent, approved the Theatre building's plans on New Road. An unknown architect built the late Georgian playhouse; much of it is still buried in the venue's existing walls. It opened in 1807 with Shakespeare's Hamlet starring Charles Kemble.

It wasn’t only the building that craved a reset; the whole organisation needed a rethink to realise its true potential. My aspirations to turn Hall For Cornwall from a venue with its roots as a city hall into one of the most respected UK regional theatres were forged early on. Whilst regional theatre has been the mainstay of my career, the challenges of reinventing a much-loved one to create a new, sustainable organisation in a small city on the furthest edge of the UK were significant.

We are working in Cornwall, our culture and heritage, with our landscape our constant source of inspiration for our creatives and, naturally, us as the charity Hall for Cornwall. In launching your new Cornwall Playhouse, we were blessed with friendships who’ve stood by our side, whether an artist, a funder, a local partner at Falmouth University or a national partner such as the Royal Shakespeare Company. In coming out of the pandemic, like everyone else, we're reassessing what we must do to be brave in this new world. Our opportunities take stock of Arts Council England's National Portfolio Organisations announcements and Cornwall; culture is now housed within Cornwall Council's portfolio of Neighbourhoods.
